This sounds brilliant!!!!!!! I'm totally surprised, that Billy found that happy tones! Sounds like a auperb sequel of those melodic MACHINA songs!

I'm also surprised by the happiness in his voice voice, and that snippet of guitar riff sounds great, but I shan't be able to judge accurately until I hear the whole song.

sounds awful "Zwan-ish" to me. I'm scratching my head, and hoping the rest of the album pleasently surprises me.

I'm sorry, but to me this sound like "the spirit of Zwan" with more distortion. This doesn't feel like the Pumpkins. I don't want a rehash of their older stuff either. I just want them to take their music to the next level like they have from Gish to Machina. They kept getting better and better...this clip sounds like a step back to me. I hope the other tracks are better.

It's only a 30 second clip. This is just like assuming you hear one sad song off the new cd and believe it to be a depressing album. Also Billy is happier these days and that in itself is a form of evolution. Trust in Billy, he hasn't let me down yet and be happy there is new music to begin with. Would you want to go another 7 years without any pumpkins?

I won't make any assessment until I can hear the whole album, and I definitely give these guys every benefit of a doubt

ehhhh.. I dunno.. I don't think it really has a pumpkins feel to it.. but like some other people said, I'll make my full assessment when I hear the whole song.

I admit that I kinda expected more of a MACHINA / MACHINA II sound, especially from a song titled "Tarantula" (which was my favorite title)... but I know I shouldn't have expectations, I need to just listen with an open mind... which I'll do when it comes out!! In my opinion, Zwan sounded a lot like Smashing Pumpkins. How could it not? When Billy and Jimmy are together, they are going to sound like the Pumpkins! Come on! I really like this clip and I am so excited for the album! I have loved everything that Billy and Jimmy have done together and I have no worries about this album!

After listening to this a few more times, it sounds like the same old crap BC has been doing since the break-up the "real" Smashing Pumpkins. This album is beginning to sound like Billy Corgan's 2nd solo album, but with a band involved and slapped the Pumpkins name on it.. just as I feared/predicted.

i've listened to it a few times now. His voice does sound an awful lot like his solo project. And as for the MCR sound, you're going to get a pop anthemic sound when you work with roy thomas baker. It's not what i expected and i think that's what "the band" was looking for. I also agree that it's good, but would not want the whole album to sound this way and I doubt it will.

Sounds like the good old pumpkins to me...James and D. don't matter. They just got in the way. I'm glad they're gone. This new album will be the pumpkins the way it should have been from the beginning.

I am a huge Pumpkins fan, but I don't know about this one. I haven't liked it since Billy changed his voice somewhere around Machina and Adore. He's gotten too whiney. Much smoother voice (although high pitched, which is his trademark) in the early/mid-90s.

I think the song is fantastic. If you must insist on comparing it to Zwan, then I can only say that it's Zwan on steroids, and Im sure the other songs will hold something different for all of us...

so no wonder that the zwan comparison pops up.
However, it sounds more like a mixture of all smashing pumpkins albums and zwan together. As far as I can judge, it shows evolution in billy's songwriting.
I can't help but feel a little dissappointed though...

the 'bright' heavy distortion sound he's adopted since Machina? I liked Machina (most of it anyway, but the sound effects he's using in this song just annoys me. I enjoy the more melodic Billy, not this overdone distorted extra high pitched singing. You're missing your melody...at least in this song. If the rest of the album is like this,there may be something to this "not the same w/o D'arcy and James" rhetoric.

THIS DOES NOT SOUND LIKE ZWAN. do you think billy corgan would really make a 'mary star of the sea part 2'?, especially after saying how his heart was with the Pumpkins, and as for poppy... remember 'Rocket'? what about 'Drown'? Those songs are poppier than this one. you can't expect Billy to conform to his old sound either. the Pumpkins will sound like how they are supposed to sound... right now, not then. I suggest listening to the new album with an open mind, knowing that Billy is pouring his heart out and just going for it.

I totally second what you're saying! Except I don't think Drown was very poppy, but Siamese Dream definitely had some happy-sounding songs in it (like Hummer & Rocket). Listening with an open mind is the key to appreciating all new music; I know it can be tough, but throw away your expectations everyone!

I'm really surprised by the sound of Tarantula, not because it sounds "poppy" or "happy", but because it sounds very ordinary in this sense: Take out the vocals and put in Billie Joe Armstrong and I could easily be convinced it was a Green Day song. Any mainstream band could have composed that clip. “Rocket”, “Drown”, “Hummer”…were all songs the Pumpkins wrote which stood out from the grunge era…you would never hear Alice and Chains writing songs like that…1979?...Forget it…in 1995 no one was doing what the Pumpkins were doing. Many tried, but we knew better. Adore & Machina were masterpieces too good for commercial success. Radio couldn’t play it and mainstream couldn’t comprehend it. The Pumpkins were always miles ahead of the rest of the world. In 2007…we’re hearing My Chemical Romance and Zwan comparisons…why? Probably because the clip sounded more familiar than ground breaking. I’m probably wrong though...Maybe we’ve become desensitized to all the crap that’s been on the radio…maybe we forgot what original sounded like. In other words, the "it" factor which made a pumpkin song "a pumpkin song" is not obvious in that 30 second clip. Maybe it just that part of the song…who knows. I guess we’ll find out next week.

The "it" factor the Pumpkins had from Gish to Machina was a sound no other band had...the Pumpkins were beyond any other band. They were in their own league creatively and they had incredibly powerful live performances. That's why Billy made Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, because he wanted to show the world, there was no other band like them...if you watch the documentary "Gracefull Swans of Never" he says it himself and they ultimately proved it to be right.

I feel like this 30 second clip is missing that…and it scares me a little. I hope the album will surprise me because in this boring world of music we live in…we need a rock hero again…we need rock to live again.

I see where you're coming from. You brought up some unfortunate truths. However, remember that even when Adore first came out, the initial reaction wasn't positive... generally, people didn't like it at first... it's only over time that people have realised that it is a very passionate, and over all, an exceptional album. the same goes with Machina.
Again, I see why you made those points but I don't think those judgements can be made as completely relevant until the entire song, let alone the entire album is released. that way, we can get the whole picture and also let time show us what this album will really mean. In my opinion, Billy Corgan/Smashing Pumpkins (along with Radiohead) are a some of a very small handful of rockers out there still trying to be artistically expansive, unique and creative unlike other artists just fitting in the mold.

I really hope "time" will let us see the album for what it is Brancastle. I've always trusted Billy to deliver when he was a Pumpkin. I really miss this band and the personal connection they gives me. No other band can do like they do and that's the reason I listen to them everyday and why they will always be #1 to me.

I'm wondering if Zeitgeist is trying to make a point by playing like this...to open the worlds eyes of the "spirit of our time" not just politically, but musicially?

well they won't really be able to open our eyes with very much at all, such as politically, unless they have done it musically as well... however, 'tarantula'... so far, to me doesn't seem like a very much of political song. i'm in the same boat as you though... the Pumpkins have always made a very personal connection with me. that's why I have faith in Billy and Jimmy, and will leave my mind open. I won't deny my disapointment if it truly has nothing extraordinary going on with it, but as of right now, I refuse to believe that the album will let me down when it comes out.

Adore was so different though! Thats why it took some time to get used to. This sounds like everything else on the radio. . and Im not saying that all the "poppy" music on the radio is bad. .this just doesnt sound like the pumpkins at their best at all! They have some really good pop songs that you can instanly tell that its a pumpkins song. But I also usually do not like their singles. Never did care for today or rocket. .so i am very hopefully that this is the case and this may be the odd song I just cant seem to get into. Hoping the whole album has a more pumpkins "feel"
