  1. James Iha - Sound of Love (orbital58)

Because of the positive feedback on our 1979 cover (done 4 years ago) we decided to cover another tune. This was interesting because we live 2 hours from each other. It's safe to say we had a blast doing it. Please enjoy. Mike Hamilton and Patrick Rohrer.

I remember this song! I had forgotten about it. This is GREAT cover of it. Amazing sound. This song reminds me of when I was dating the girl I married and living in Seattle. Great times. Thanks for the song and the memory.

This is a James Iha song. He was the guitar player and with the SP and went on to have a solo career. I belive he was from the windy city (Chicago) as well as Corgan. Hoping the original band will all be on Letterman and Iha gets to sing a solo. He actually was a MUCH better vocalist than Corgan (IMO)Not trying to piss anyone off here! They were just an incredible group and their music is really missed.

So here it is...
No, it's not a Pumpkins song. Mike turned me on to James' solo album (Let It Come Down - 1998) not long after it came out. I thought to myself, "What an amazing departure from the expected and assumed James Iha." Dispite uncertain reviews by critics and some Pumpkins fans, I knew James had crafted a beautiful and uplifting album. We both love the track and thought it would be fun to cut. Since my voice is soooo dynamically opposite of Billys, it makes more sense for me to try James' songs. I think it's necessary to musically switch gears every now and again. It keeps the cogs turning and engine running. Billy must have also had similar feelings when he formed Zwan. Enjoy and please give us your thoughts and song suggestions.

Nice cover of a Iha song
Guest , June 25, 2007

This is a nice cover of James Iha song. I actually was one of the 5 people that bought his solo CD! I'm glad you covered this in his honour. He would be proud, I think. Nice vocals.

Guest,
Thanks brother...or sister? I wasn't entirely sure how this would be received. True, it's not purely Pumpkins, but you bought the album (as did Mike, myself and 2 other unidentified individuals = 5) so we must have done something right. I'd like to think James has heard this (unlikely) and thought we did his tune justice. In my vast collection of albums "Let It Come Down" seems to sneak its way into the player quite frequently. I think everyone has a record like that...their guilty pleasure that lasts the test of time and always enhances their mood from bummed to feeling groovy.

who's the singer?
Guest , June 27, 2007

hi, I have listened to this about 20 times. The vocals sound like some well known artist I've heard before but can't place. HELP! who is it?

To the above entry,
First, thanks for listening about 20 times. That makes me feel good...assuming you like it. My name is Patrick Rohrer and I have no fame to my name. As for sounding like another artist...hmmm...this could be a good thing for me. Record companys tend to hire sound alike artists, I guess the theory is to hit the market hard while the 'iron's hot'. Regardless...I'm rambling. I listen to a lot of Beatles, Ween, T.S.P, Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, James Iha & Bob Dylan. It could be a hodge-podge of their sounds...but to me it's just me. I think the voice you have you're just stuck with unless you're Bob Dylan...he tried changing his a few different times (hilarious).

to whomever posted saying Patrick sounded like some well known artist but couldn't place it:

Upon first listen I thought he sounded almost dead on James Iha. Which - I guess was kinda the point eh?! ha!

Better vocals than JI
Guest , June 28, 2007

I have listened to this song til I'm ready to shoot myself in the foot! smilies/razz.gif Only kidding here. This guy has a great voice and after listening about 30 or more times, I have come to a few conclusions. He is difinately a better more expressive singer than JI. I also think he should be taking his talent more seriously. I only knew of this song because my older brother introduced me to it when JI attempted a solo career. This was my favorite cut from the CD. I am 19 and was just a kid when I first heard any of TSP. Never thought BC was that good of a singer but liked watching thier video's on MTV. This website has been a nice memory of hanging with my big brother. Thanks for the songs. Marc in GA

Marc,
This is an amazing complement to receive! To be viewed as vocally equal or PAST Billy or James is uncomprehendable to me. I do take my music seriously however. I am a amateur song writer with around 50ish tunes in my current catalog. As of this letter to you I have only shared my music with small crowds and close friends. Your support, and that of other comment makers, makes me consider stepping up to the professional challenge. I too have many memories that revolve around the SP. Mike, the other musician playing on this, and I use to drive around in his beat up Mercury Tracer (that smelled of cigarettes and every type of colonge ever produced) and cruise the streets of our home town like we owned the world. It's hilarious in retrospect. Hold on to the memories you've made the best you can. They're some of my favorites.

Not to say ...
Guest , June 29, 2007

Not to say that James is not a talented dude or anything like that, cuz he was a great guitarist and had lots to offer TSP , but I think this is such a great cover and I usually don't think covers are as good as the originals...this one is!

This cover is light years ahead of the '79 cover... I like the '79 song, but the vocals sounded like a dry, uncompressed mic... anyway... this one sounds very well produced... makes me want to dig my Iha album out...

This is brilliant. Your vocals do suit this song better than James'. Loves it.
