I say you and Jimmy have a drum showdown! Nice freaking job! The endurance factor simply blows me away... I can hardly imagine how Jimmy ever manages to play three hour shows the way he does!

Many kudos!

I've seen many of your covers in your youtube channel and my favourite is Thru the Eyes of Ruby.

In the future
written by Eye , February 02, 2008
You could try contributing drums to someone else's cover of a Pumpkins song. Like someone approaches you with a rough cut of their demo without drums, and you would see if you could tell them whether or not you think you contribute to the song. A sort of freelance studio track drummer smilies/wink.gif. But maybe that's a crazy idea.

I remember for the first Act IV show, a guy actually tried to audition by sending as an audio tape him drumming to Pumpkins song, which was kind of weird considering that there was no backing track. It was in the pre-Youtube days of course. In that case, the guy should have approached individual bands instead to offer his services, or send a general message out to people offering his services.

David

written by Guest , February 03, 2008
Hey David,

I actually am a freelance drummer. And I actually have a whole Pumpkins backing tracks CD that I sell that's basically JUST drums so people can play along/make covers/turn up really loud for fun etc etc. I'm playing along to the original songs in my headphones so everything's perfectly in time. I have a sample video up on Youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3YL6zN1clA

But no, it's not a crazy idea at all. I think more people should do it! But I'm always up for new ideas. I used to do everything for free but more and more work came in and I started to struggle so now I charge a tiiiiiiny fee.

Thanks David,
Phil

Phil, you're an amazing drummer! Wow! I'm going to look
you up on YouTube ASAP....
...But David, can you explain to me how this qualifies
as a **cover song**?!? It's NOT a cover version (anymore than the women who sings over the Zeitgeist track is) If Phil were drumming to anything but the actual offcial studio released version by the Smashing Pumpkins (which is audible throughout) or *just* drums, I might say, "OK, great..." I'm not trying to rain on
anybody's parade, but this just doesn't seem like a cover
version, which I thought was the whole point of the contest. The good news, Phil, is that you're in the lead
by a substantial margin smilies/smiley.gif

To Eastern Mind: I'm not normally someone who pays
attention to guys' legs (lol), but what struck me night
after night at the Fillmore is how Jimmy's calves resembled Popeye's. They're humongous! You have to be in
*really* good shape to be a drummer...
Regarding the status of covers
written by Eye , February 14, 2008
This is something I should have anticipated given the prevalence of different covers on youtube, but I guess at the time we didn't want to be too limiting. Of course, a cover like this would not be able to go on CD, but many people still consider this a sort of cover.

Hello everyone. There have been several complaints about the voting system. And after further review, some flaws were identified. My colleague, the webmaster for ThePumpkins.net, Jay (MurderMcMurderson) has installed some new security measures to help ensure more fair voting. And to help things along, we are starting fresh, so the voting is as fair was we can get it from the start.

Please recast your vote if have not already done so. Before you vote, please thoughtfully listen to all the Zeitgeist covers, and choose what you feel is the best cover. In all honesty, this contest should be an indication of how many feel a given cover is the best cover, not who is the most popular band, artist, or person.

If you have submitted something for the contest, please encourage your fans to check out all the covers before making a decision. You are welcome to mention that you have a cover up for the contest, but I am imploring you not to blatantly tell people to go vote for your cover.

I know we cannot control what people to tell their fans on myspace or anywhere else, but I am asking you to do a favor to everyone involved, and be as fair and honest as possible. In the scheme of things, I would hope that people would get more enjoyment from winning fairly, knowing what people actually think of their cover, rather than distorting the outcome to win a few CDs and vinyls.

take care,
David
Not a cover.
written by Guest , February 15, 2008
I simply do not understand how this is considered a cover. This is the exact same thing as singing over a track or playing a guitar over a track. Sure, its impressive but it simply means that your saying drums are harder or more impressive to play than other instruments or singing which is entirely untrue. Props for the skill but this should not qualify.
...
written by Guest , February 16, 2008
i totally agree. this isn't a cover. this should be disqualified. but you've definitely got some skill...for "star search".
I understand your concerns
written by Eye , February 16, 2008
As I have mentioned previously, we did not really expect 'covers' like this to be submitted when we wrote up the rules. At time it was accepted, it was only our 2nd submission, so I am sure it was hard to turn away. Many youtube users consider this and lilkitn's cover of "Zeitgeist" as covers, so perhaps that's why it is so popular, given his skill at drumming. I know it's using the term cover very loosely, but now we know for future contests to include a stipulation addressing those sorts of covers.

.
written by Guest , February 17, 2008
Thanks a lot. As for Youtube, although I do want to try and tell the people who like my videos, my link takes them to ALL the covers so it's their choice if they wish to listen to the others. I'll never tell them not to. Plus it makes sense to use a following. I'm not just telling everyone and anyone, these all 97% Pumpkins fans and I'm glad you changed the system. I'm not the kind of person to vote for myself over and over again. I agree with that. But I do think it's important to use a following, I think certain bands, not to mention any names, probably wouldn't have sold any albums in the last 10 years or so if it wasn't for a following.

Where do you draw the line with self promotion? It'd be hard to stay absolutely neutral when telling a friend about the contest and plus it's just a bit of fun. Also, I don't really see the problem if someone does use self promotion to the extremes, surely that's plugging the site more?

The bottom line is I guess anyone can promote themselves as much as they want. I don't have a myspace or anything. I just play drums and hope people like it.

Phil
.
written by Guest , February 17, 2008
As for people who don't vote for themselves, that's up to them. Although it does seem kind of silly. I know, I know, they probably see themselves as 'kind spirited' or something, but if they see it as other people are better than them, then they need to sit their ass back down with their instrument and get practicing.

Promotions
written by Eye , February 17, 2008
I can understand your point of view, and the need for self-promotion. I guess just the way you presented in the video, seemed to bit too direct for my personal taste. I am not saying you shouldn't promote yourselves, but I would suggest more subtlety personally.

I probably would have said something like "Hey, I got a cover in this contest. You can go to ThePumpkins.net to listen to all the covers. Vote for the one you think is best." But that's me. Perhaps with a suggestive wink or something lol

Hey people,

I've been playing acoustic kits for 15 years now. I only use the electric Roland kit to record some stuff for you Tube with. If we're talking acoustic kits, you should've done your homework. You tube have had one of my acoustic solos as a featured video. So nice try but after 15 years I think I've got the hang of rebounds Sugar. Electric or acoustic smilies/wink.gif

WHOA
written by Guest , February 19, 2008
Skills.

However, this isn't exactly a cover since it's just you nor is it any different... I like seeing covers that are unique. Plus you get auto-points from idiots who just think OMG VIDEO MUST B GUD.

Great job, but you shouldn't be on top.
...
written by Guest , February 19, 2008
I disagree. I should be on top. I entered a video because I do agree that I am playing over it and it wouldn't be that interesting to listen to. In fact I feel it's not that interesting WITHOUT me playing over it. They've done better songs.

Plus I don't know about the auto points because it's a video. I think a lot of people can tell the difference between a good video and bad video.

Thank you for the skills comment. I DO appreciate that, but musically I don't think there that many really great musicians who have put covers in. Although a few people have really good voices.

I'll add this comment without hiding behind the moniker of "Guest", as it seems many others have done.

You're a great drummer, but this is not a cover song. Enjoy your silver Zeitgeist. smilies/confused.gif

I respect each and every fellow contestant who has entered to take a stab at this contest. I had a great time taking a break from my own music career to have a little fun here. But your pompous attitude a couple of comments above is loathsome. Don't cut down everyone just because you think your entry is the best.

Let's see you arrange guitar, bass, and vocals (and keys if you really want to be complete) over your drums, and then we'll talk about bad musicianship.
...
written by Guest , February 20, 2008
Oh I understand mine isn't really a cover. I entered knowing full well that it probably wouldn't even get entered but to my surprise it made it in.

As for musicianship. I play all instruments listed actually, and although I can't sing, I kind of make up for it. Now I was being a nice guy until people started whinging at me.

So I agree that it's hardly a cover. And I understand that if I'd just entered audio it'd be pointless. So I am thank you that I made it in here.

All you negative whiners shut up and chill out. It's meant to be fun. Can't you buy the damn prize from the shop?
Might as well add fuel to the fire.
written by Guest , February 20, 2008

Frankly, the situation is very simple: you have submitted a video as opposed to an audio file. Isn't this the same as anyone else entering a music video of themselves performing their covers? Your right, this submission would make no sense if we couldn't see you drum. In that sense you've submitted something that CAN'T be judged on the same level as all the other entries.

"Thank you for the skills comment. I DO appreciate that, but musically I don't think there that many really great musicians who have put covers in. Although a few people have really good voices."

I agree that you have very solid drumming skills, however comments like this just go to show you that the only unbiased way to judge a contest is by a panel of judges.. sigh.

I don't particularly care about the prize at all, but I just wanted to add my two cents about this situation.

- Rao (too lazy to create an account lol)

Tone down negativity-Let your vote speak for itself
written by Eye , February 20, 2008
As much as this cover doesn't fit the mold of a full cover, I think people may be wasting time just posting negative comments about it. If you don't like the cover or say don't like another cover on here, you don't have to vote for something you don't want to. You have just to let your votes speak for themselves. Use your best judgment to choose who ever you think has the best/most deserving cover. Whether it be this cover, Rao's cover, Georgiana's cover (since they are the top 3), or any other 22 covers involved in this.

written by flSPnuts , February 22, 2008
THe drumming was great...no one can question that. I do agree however 100% with the people who have a problem with this not being a "cover." No one would vote for someone singing over "United States" to the original song, or for that matter someone even playing the guitar over the original song. It isnt a matter of people whining. It is a matter of what is right and wrong. This video is GREAT but should have never been allowed to be considered a cover. The fault doesnt belong to Phil, the fault lies with the people who allowed it in. Dont shoot Phil, he didnt do anything wrong. Congratulations to Phil and I hope him the best....as well as everyone else who submitted their music.

So I really can understand everyone who's angry that I came out on top. If there's ever to be another contest I'll enter with a full band. Either that or create some crazy one man band kind of thing. Yeah good point, how do you people know I wasn't playing the other instruments with my feet?
