written by Event Of The Year , December 23, 2007
I must admit, those digital artifacts are definitely not supposed to be in there...I'm not sure what happened, that's so strange...

I'm waiting to hear from the site administrators if I can re-submit my entry. Damn, that really bums me out...

Wheels are spinning...

Thanks, marquisspades. You have me thinking now...

Thanks for the support from everyone who has checked this out. My personal philosophy for doing a cover is to do it in a way that isn't an exact replica. Take Dreaming by Blondie, or Destination Unknown by Missing Persons, or, heaven forbid, Rock On by David Essex, and look how the Pumpkins put their own spin on it (Or To Love Somebody...) Thanks, everyone! Good Luck to the other contestants, it has been a pleasure...

Covers
written by Eye , February 03, 2008
I can appreciate the sentiment about not wanting to make exact copies of covers. It's good to put your own spin on songs, but I found that not all good covers have to necessarily be far removed from the original as the covers you mention are for the most part. Sometimes even a tweak here and there can make your own mark on a song. As I mentioned in response to one of the other threads, songs on some of the more commercial tributes have been drastically different from the original but they didn't really capture the spirit of the songs at all, almost like they have never heard SP before. So there is good and not so good covers along the whole spectrum from straight forward to drastically different.

Hello everyone. There have been several complaints about the voting system. And after further review, some flaws were identified. My colleague, the webmaster for ThePumpkins.net, Jay (MurderMcMurderson) has installed some new security measures to help ensure more fair voting. And to help things along, we are starting fresh, so the voting is as fair was we can get it from the start.

Please recast your vote if have not already done so. Before you vote, please thoughtfully listen to all the Zeitgeist covers, and choose what you feel is the best cover. In all honesty, this contest should be an indication of how many feel a given cover is the best cover, not who is the most popular band, artist, or person.

If you have submitted something for the contest, please encourage your fans to check out all the covers before making a decision. You are welcome to mention that you have a cover up for the contest, but I am imploring you not to blatantly tell people to go vote for your cover.

I know we cannot control what people to tell their fans on myspace or anywhere else, but I am asking you to do a favor to everyone involved, and be as fair and honest as possible. In the scheme of things, I would hope that people would get more enjoyment from winning fairly, knowing what people actually think of their cover, rather than distorting the outcome to win a few CDs and vinyls.

take care,
David
Who was that Masked Man?
written by Guest , February 16, 2008
Hi oh Silver.... I voted again. Good luck on a great job and based on your comments, it's been well received by your peers. What's next? An album of Smashing Cover Hits? Maybe an alter ego band called Breakin Squash?

I'd like to close out the contest with sincere thanks to everyone who checked out my entry (and voted for me!) I'm impressed with the quality and quantity of the entries received for this contest, and wish everyone who submitted the best of luck with their respective musical aspirations / careers.

Let's remember that we're all fans of (the) Smashing Pumpkins, and give credit to those you hosted, organized, and put forth the venue to compete amongst fans from around the world. Could this even be possible ten years ago? Big thumbs up to the administrators.

Although the contest lacked a clear definition of "cover song" in it's execution, I appreciate the opportunity. It made my winter a little more fun.

Best wishes again to the contestants, and thanks again for your support!

Sincerely,

Jeff Savage
