Well done!
hmm
written by spaceboy90 , February 04, 2008
it seems to have lost all the emotion, which is the best part of this song. This is my favorite song off zeitgeist too.
No la la la?

The beautiful people, the beautiful people...no wait, it's Pomp and Circumstances! I love the originality and the production, but I agree with Spaceboy90, something seems to be lost in translation...props for the submission!

I think this rocks hard.
Good effort

I like this better. You don't sound like you are singing for a theatre troupe. No offense but the original is horrible.
Interesting!

Its interesting that the ONLY other song that "spaceboy90" has commented on was "Event of the year"s and he said that he loved it. Weird that they both had exactly the same opinion of this song too! (not to mention, one right after the other)

I think that you "two" were meant for each other! smilies/wink.gif

I enjoy this cover, especially since it is the first one that is a full band that isnt mostly computer generated instruments! (I believe the pumpkins still use instruments) smilies/bigeek.gif

not everyone has access to a full band smilies/mad.gif

pretty good, cool new view on the song, sweet solo
Quite a heated debate
written by Eye , February 04, 2008
Ideally everyone would have live drummers, but the reality is that they don't as Teej212 pointed out. And these are submissions for a contest, rather than a concert. Not having in a live drummer would not preclude a band from being accepted to play at a concert, but if it was for an electric set of a show, then they would have to in the words of Joe Shanahan to Billy back in 1988, "get a drummer".

A good example is a fellow Canadian band, UnderWeb Effect who submitted demos for the 2nd Act IV concert. Originally it was one guy but he put together some impressive demos that sound reasonably like a full band (sans a real drummer), that were sufficient to get a thumbs up for selection committee members. By the time the concert rolled around, his 'band' had been chosen as alternates, and he had in the mean time formed a full band, complete with live drummer. The band would later rename themselves Frequency Fall for those of you are interested.

The point of my comment? No need to slight people from not having a live drummer, as that does not make or break a song, it's the performance and composition that matters. Remember that not all the songs on Adore had a live drummer, and if they did, it was usually loops of bits and pieces of live drums. A digital beat is fine as long as it works within the context of the song, and is not overly distracting.

Beautiful People
written by Eye , February 04, 2008
Event of the Year, you read my mind on the 'Beautiful People' note, musically it does sound sort of like Marilyn Manson in style. Cyanide Kiss, are you guys influenced by Manson? By the way, as I mentioned in my other notes on other songs, I will not be saying what I think of these covers. Just making comments in relation to the style I notice, and weighing in on the live versus electronic debate, and so on.

I am hoping that many more people than usually post on this website will vote and possibly even register if they want to stay for the 'best cover' stage of the contest. So if you are a band that submitted something, please make people aware of the contest.
Go figure....
written by Cyanide Kiss , February 04, 2008
Ha, Ha. Go figure its our submission that starts up all the controversy. smilies/confused.gif

Yeah, we have a real drummer...however, we do sometimes use a real kit mixed in with an electronic kit for recording and live shows, so although I agree with the person who backed us up! (thanks buddy!) The electronic kits and programmed drums can do some cool things also!

I love Adore and especially Ava Adore...which makes good use of the drum machine. However I also remind you all back to when Flood was recording MCIS. He would always go for a passionate take rather than the perfect take. I find that there is more passion in a human than in a computer.
My point...both are cool....it just depends on the song!

But "Beautiful People"? Really? I have listened to some Manson and I think that some of his stuff is OK...but we really arent big fans. Each member in our group listens to different stuff. I (Rob - singer/guitar) am the pumpkin fan and was the one that really pushed for us to submit a song. I chose this song because it was probably one of my least favorite musically on the new album but had great lyrics and I wanted to try and make it more of a 90’s style pumpkin song.

Thanks for the comments.

Perhaps we are missing out another influence you guys have then. Your voice definitely doesn't sound like Marilyn Manson smilies/wink.gif. It was one of my least favorite musically as well on Zeitgeist. Yes it really does depend on the song, or even the specific rendition of the song.
Oops

That was me again above. It is not just your song, if you look through the comments, there are some other songs that have pretty hefty comments.

It neeeds more cowbell, or a guest appearance from Mike.

sounds like weird al??
good take on a musically vacant track
written by Guest , February 06, 2008
Pomp and Circumstance was a decent "album ender" on Zeitgeist - but I'd have to disagree with Spaceboy90 - "la la la la's" don't evoke much emotion to me, where this version seems to punk up and rock out a more mundane track from the album. well done.

I also appreciate the fact this creation sounds like it came from more than one source (or at least one guy doing 3 or 4 parts)Using the full band sound takes more effort for sure instead of the "drum machine pumpkins" a la Adore, of which we all know was not the true vein of pumpkin music.
My favorite so far ...

I found Pomp and Circumstances to be the worst song on Zeitgeist, if SP could have a "worst song" on an album. This version does what I think all great covers do - revamp an old classic (as Cake did with "I Will Survive") or take a lousy / mediocre song and turn it into a musical masterpiece. This song does the latter. The vocals do justice to the Pumpkins style. Nice overlaying of catchy rhythmic sounds with a melodic background and an effective solo to end things off.

I really like this take on the song, great great singing! I can definitely see the beautiful people bit people are pulling from this though. Not a bad thing, i like how it sounds, but i can really hear the similarities.
Please Read

Hello everyone. There have been several complaints about the voting system. And after further review, some flaws were identified. My colleague, the webmaster for ThePumpkins.net, Jay (MurderMcMurderson) has installed some new security measures to help ensure more fair voting. And to help things along, we are starting fresh, so the voting is as fair was we can get it from the start.

Please recast your vote if have not already done so. Before you vote, please thoughtfully listen to all the Zeitgeist covers, and choose what you feel is the best cover. In all honesty, this contest should be an indication of how many feel a given cover is the best cover, not who is the most popular band, artist, or person.

If you have submitted something for the contest, please encourage your fans to check out all the covers before making a decision. You are welcome to mention that you have a cover up for the contest, but I am imploring you not to blatantly tell people to go vote for your cover.

I know we cannot control what people to tell their fans on myspace or anywhere else, but I am asking you to do a favor to everyone involved, and be as fair and honest as possible. In the scheme of things, I would hope that people would get more enjoyment from winning fairly, knowing what people actually think of their cover, rather than distorting the outcome to win a few CDs and vinyls.

take care,
David
